Stay Gold
One of my all-time favourite bands is Everything But the Girl. You may know them from their mid-nineties classic, Missing. (…like the deserts miss the rain…) They’re so much more than that though! This past year they released their first album in twenty years called Fuse, and it’s been on heavy rotation since. This quilt was partly inspired by a song from their 1999 album, Temperamental, called The Future of the Future (Stay Gold). It’s a big house number, with Tracey Thorn’s haunting vocals lighting the way.
I wanted to create a quilt that felt golden with luxury. So I used hue and value to create a checkerboard effect of interlocking Delectable Mountains blocks. This is the same technique I used for my Rainbow Mountains quilt, amongst a few others. Nearly all of the fabrics contain a golden metallic element, as does the backing, so the quilt truly does sparkle. As the photos do most of the talking, I’ll leave you with the glittering lyrics from The Future of the Future (Stay Gold) by Everything But the Girl.
The future of the future will still contain the past
Time goes slow and time goes fast
I can feel you looking back at me
To see how I’ve gone on
What is it eating at you that makes you want me now I’m gone?
And it’s so bright tonight
Do you see those cars, those lights?
The future of the future will still repeat today
Where time goes fast then fades away
You say- think of the old days
We could have them back again
Well I’ve thought about the old days
They’d go bad like they did then
And it’s so bright tonight
Do you see those cars, those lights?
The future of the future will still contain tonight
The passage of day the passage of light
And I’m not going home again
Tomorrow will never come
And it’s so bright tonight
Do you see those cars, those lights?
Do you see those roads, these sights?
What you gonna do about me now?
What you gonna do about me now?
What you gonna do about me now?
What you gonna do about me now?
It’s so bright tonight
And it’s so bright tonight
Do you see those cars, those lights?
And in case you’re wondering why there are two bottles of Veuve Clicquot on my bed? Because I’m Molli-goddamned-Sparkles, that’s why! LOL! But really, who doesn’t sleep better with champagne?
