Colour Drain Cushion
My oldest work in progress is now a fast finish! Way back in 2014, I combined a random smattering of Art Gallery Oval Elements and V & Co. Ombrés into 2.5″ half square triangles. I kept the colour story candy-coated since I knew the ombrés would be dipping in and out of value. I assembled them so that the diagonal lines of the HSTs would create a concentric diamond shape. Again, who doesn’t love diamonds; it’s a recurring theme around here! However, then it got shoved in a drawer and all the love was lost. Until recently!
Now look how fabulous she is! This 24″ panel was never meant to be a standalone quilt, so I decided to turn her into a jumbo cushion! And hey yo, look at me doing my own quilting! Yes, it’s straight line, but I really wanted to emphasise the dynamics between the V & Co. ombré and the Art Gallery Oval Elements fabrics. I also threw in some additional vertical lines to create a bit more visual interest. (Like, why are they there? Who knows, but I like them!)
Here’s the clincher, though. I used a brand new to me thread, and I’m in love with it. It’s a thread called Mettler, and I’m sure many of you have already heard about it. I believe a spool of it even comes with every Bernina machine! This is their Silk Finish Cotton 50wt, colour 9838 Lilac Bouquet, which is a variegated purple-lavender combo. Colourwise, I thought it hit all the right tonal notes, and it sewed up easily and beautifully. No breaks, no lint, and my Juki TL-98p didn’t complain one bit! I’ll do a more thorough thread review soon, wink-wink.
For the backing, I headed straight to my favourite home-dec fabric store, Bev’s Remnant Warehouse just down the street from me. I found yardage of this tealy, velvety, micro-suedey scrumptiousness that not only looks luxe, it feels like an an angel is caressing me with his wings. Popped in a side-zip in coordinating teal, and shazam, jumbo cushion for moi! (I’ve got a big butt and I can not lie!)
Oh, and here’s a little outtake photo of me trying to balance this Colour Drain cushion in the air with my feet. It wasn’t going so well. But if you’re into feet, this might be a whole new segment of the industry I need to break into! Kidding! Maybe? OnlyFans?! Now it’s time to tackle my next oldest work-in-progress, which is just a few hours younger than this one was! Eek!
Fantastic looking cushion! I love that quilting, too. Great job–I’m inspired by your talent.
Absolutely fabulous!
Beautiful
Love the subtle look of the diamonds. Beautiful!
Btw…I skipped the photo with the feet…definitely not a foot fan 😂
Fabulous pillow! And that is the most gorgeous zipper I’ve ever seen. Perfect for this pillow.
Beautiful pillow! The diamond shape is subtle and I love it!
