Cut It Up QAL: B08 – Autumn Leaf
As I’ve been laying out my completed quilt blocks, I’ve noticed they’re all very graphic. Lots of stars, stripes, and crosses. Don’t get me wrong, I love that: I did make them after all! However, I wanted to soften the collection up a bit with something a bit more pictorial. I considered my Don’t Be a Dick quilt block, but yeah, that might not vibe with the tone of this quilt! LOL! Instead, I discovered this Autumn Leaf Quilt Block Tutorial that marries up the graphic lines of previous blocks with a recognisable shape. They’re also very directional, so will lead the eye around your quilt depending on how you place them.
I stuck with my Tula Pink stash, employing some ombre prints from the Daydreamer collection combined with Fairy Dust background fabric. I love how they’ve turned out like actual colour-shifting autumnal leaves. I could just see a whole quilt from these blocks! (Isn’t that always the case though?!)
This tutorial provides options for three different sizes, and you reference the chart and diagram to determine how to cut your fabric pieces before piecing them. I’ve made two of the 10″ finished block sizes. Do those top corner pieces look familiar? Didn’t we just make something similar as part of the wonky pinwheel block? Mmm-hmm! This time, I didn’t make them wonky, and instead drew my lines from corner to 2.25″ (dissecting the block directly in half). I also altered the stem section as I didn’t want to appliqué it. I started with a 5″ background fabric and cut in on the diagonal. My stem fabric started as a 1″ strip, with the background triangles sewn to either side. I then trimmed the block down to 4.5″ to combine with the rest of the sections of the block.

These have come together exactly how I envisioned, and I’ve already placed them in my quilt. Time to start sewing some of these blocks together! Definitely a winner. Love that it looks difficult, but your tutorial makes it very doable! Thanks
Such beautiful fabrics – thanks for the pattern link 🙂
I have been trying to make this maple leaf, however I am losing the 1/4 seam allowance on the leaf tips. What m I doing wrong?
