Cut It Up QAL: B07 – Wonky Pinwheel
Hold on to your glitter pens, because I am back! I had to take a bit of a respite for some personal life stuff, but things are getting all shades of better. Our next block selection as part of the Cut It Up QAL is the Wonky Pinwheel block with a tutorial by Greenleaf Goods. I was turned onto this tutorial way back at the beginning of my quilt career as part of a quilt bee. Since I didn’t get to keep those blocks, I’ve always wanted to make more for me! I can now say I’ve achieved that goal!
I also wanted to choose this block because I know so many of you had some challenges with the Super Card Trick block. In the beginning, foundation paper piecing isn’t easy because it feels like you’re constructing your block upside down and backwards. Well, while you’re following the tutorial for this Wonky Pinwheel block, I want you to think about the similarities between it and the Super Card Trick block. What you may find is that you’re actually foundation paper piecing — without the paper!

Here’s also a photo of the first time I made these units, but in a much more cohesive manner. However you decide to place your fabrics, you can achieve a really modern and abstract cascade of colour running through your final layout. Or go completely random and sew wild with abandon. Either way, this is an excellent way to use up some of the scraps from all that top shelf fabric now that you’ve Cut It Up!

I’m blond, American and the wrong side of sixty – so upside down and backwards is my middle name! Love this block – might be my favorite of this QAL! I also tried EQ-ing it on point and also fun!
Thanks!
Another vesion of diasppearing pinwheel! I prefer this one. A pattern i’ve been searching my AMH scraps…thank you!
Thanks Molli, these look like a heap of fun! Can’t wait for Thursday (my weekend!) so I can get into these 💕
