Cut It Up QAL: B05 – Scrappy Churn Dash
Grab your mugs, because I’m about to serve you some piping hot Truth Tea. The churn dash is my least favourite quilt block. There, I said it! I feel so guilty and relieved at the same time. Honestly, it’s just not a block I’ve been altogether that attracted to since I started quilting. I know it’s classic, and has a history longer than my favourite blonde weave, but, meh. So, why have I chosen it as the latest Cut It Up QAL block?
First, just because I don’t like something, doesn’t mean that you have to dislike it as well! Go get your churn dash mad love affair on! Oooww! Secondly, I’m constantly on the lookout for variations of the block that make me reconsider. Some followers may remember the Churn Dash With Love quilt I made during COVID-lockdown. This has a gooey heart centre, that made me melt with these tonal solid colours. (Pattern by Nelly Holmes).
Likewise, this scrappy variation from Blossom Heart Quilts has made me stand up and pay attention. If we’re all using our top shelf fabric, we want to make sure we get the most out of them. Well, let’s grab our scraps and put them to good use! This free tutorial creates an unfinished 12.5″ block so it will play nicely with many of the others in this series. Additionally, there are so many fabric options to spice this block up, no two will ever look the same. You might even consider some fussy cutting for that middle 4.5″ square! Once you get your fabrics selected, this block sews up without much fuss.

I have made three of these blocks so far, but I left my backgrounds in the same fabrics. However, you feel free to go wild with your own scrap fantasy!
Also, you won’t hurt my feelings by grabbing your favourite churn dash block tutorial and using it instead. If you have an unusual option share it with the rest of us in the Molli Sparkles & The Glitterati Facebook group because I’m sure we’ll want to have a go! Remember to follow me on Instagram: molli_sparkles to see all of my progress on this Cut It Up quilt and many others!
Right behind you – this is not a fav of mine either but LOVE the 2 blocks instead one one bar on the sides – recently made 5 baby quilts – this pandemic has got to stop! I like to make Eye Spy quilts and your design adds zip! And everything looks great with those prints! Thanks!
I like to see a fussy cut centre square but love your scrappy fabrics version, especially the blue <3
Just want you to know how much you brighten my day. I look forward to your newsletter and make sure to sit and take time to read it throughly. Thanks for the easy directions for this block.
There’s always something – I don’t mind churn dash blocks but I’m not a fan of the Tula Pink fabrics (I know!! Might need to hand in my Sparkle Club membership card 😂). I love your blocks for their overall look – the colours are amazing, but up close the fabrics just don’t do anything for me, and isn’t that the joy of patchwork – we can pick and choose the fabric and styles that suit us.
