Cut It Up QAL: B01 – Scrappy Cross Patchwork
Hey hey hey, my Cut It Up QAL friends! I hope you’ve been thinking about some awesome top shelf fabric, and you’re ready to Cut It Up! If you haven’t quite decided, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time. Remember, there’s no pressure around here: you can join in for as little or as much as you want. The first block I’ve decided to make for my quilt is the Scrappy Cross Patchwork Block. This is a free tutorial found at Bonjour Quilts and the blocks come together super quickly. I made this block as part of The Honey Pot Bee and it was always one of my favourites, so I thought it would be a fabulous place to kick us all off! There’s no points to match, no seams to nest, and it has lots of opportunity for being scrappy or cohesive. I’ve used four fabrics from Tula Pink, and two solids. You can find the tutorial at the link below.

Now, you might be thinking, “Um, Molli, my Scrappy Cross Patchwork Block isn’t quite the same as yours!” Well, you’d be right. I call this the remix version! The original block tutorial makes a 9″ block unfinished (8.5″ finished) and sets at a right angle — y’know, a square. I wanted to upsize it to a traditional 12.5″, so I put it on point, surrounded by triangles. (Sort of like an Economy Block!) See below on the extra steps I took to do this.
Either way you choose to go with making this block, it’s going to give you some fierce fabric opportunities! I love high contrast in my quilts, but you may want to go another direction. That’s totally okay, and a great way to enjoy the process. I’m probably going to make four or five of these blocks so I have plenty of options down the road. I’ll ensure to post progress photos of them all on all my socials. I hope this gives you a little nudge to take your best fabric and CUT IT UP!
I love this block. Thank you. The quilt along will be fun
