Sunday Stash #288 – Yellow, Medium Mint and Red
When it comes to thread, I’m a bit of a snob. I’m sure there are plenty of gorgeous threads out there that give plenty of good lovin’ to their quilters. Hand claps for that! In the same vein, Aurifil gives me everything I need from thread so why go looking for anything else? It has all the colours, it comes in all the weights, a spool lasts forever-ever, there’s virtually no lint, and my Juki drinks it up like a fine wine on a Tuesday night. So am I a snob, or have I just found what works for me? I’ll happily claim both!
I recently sent the below quilt top to my longarmer, Leanne at Mount Vincent Quilts. I asked her to stitch in the ditch around a few places, and she sent it back completed as I had requested. However, as I was binding the quilt, contemplating its artistic intent, I realised I wanted some more quilting in a few areas. That led me to auditioning the Aurifil thread I had on hand, discovering none of my spools were quite a match for this quilt. So I asked around and discovered Amitie Textiles seemed to be the retailer for all things Aurifil. (I haven’t needed to buy any in a long time! I told you it lasts forever!)
Since I would primarily be using these for quilting (rather than piecing), I opted for the 40 weight. The slightly thicker thread shows up a bit more on the surface of the quilt than 50 weight. The lower the number, the thicker the thread because it’s an assumed fraction, e.g. 1/2 (half) is more than 1/4 (quarter). That being said, I use the two interchangeably for all tasks and I’ve never been let down. So now I’m gonna retroactively lay down some FMQ of my own, and hopefully it will all work out for the best!
