Sunday Stash #268 – Bananas in Singapore
This shit is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S! Yeah, it is. That statement applies to a whole range of things happening in the world today. I’m sure you can fill in your own blanks. As we get collectively older, do we become more aware of these bananas or is crazy shit just happening at an ever-increasingly alarming rate? While I’m left pondering about the state of the upside down, let’s look at pretty fabrics!
This collection of rarities and oddities stem from a recent trip to Singapore. Whenever I’m there, I try to make time to hustle over to People’s Park Market for at least half a day of fabric shopping. It’s unreal the craziness that you’ll find amongst the many stalls. It’s cash only, so on this visit I took out $80 and made sure I stuck to it. Those top two pieces are a medium-heavyweight cotton / linen blend that are destined to be new grocery shopping bags. If you’ve got a favourite tutorial: remember sharing is caring!
Alas, how could I walk on by a piece of fabric that has multi-coloured jewels with flecks of silver and constellations embedded in them? Short answer: I couldn’t! Then sitting next to that bolt was this great yellow piece that also has flecks, but this time in gold. It’s like all my sparkles dreams came at once! Somebody get me a moist towelette!
I bet you didn’t know I used to collect stamps. I did, true story. That’s the type of cool kid I was. Rocking the USPS all the way down to PO Box 323. I’ll never forget that day in 1994 when they introduced self-adhesive stamps. Life-changing, and my collection was never the same! But now I can add some stamps fit for a queen to my collection, in all shades of fabulous!
Is that glitter on the fabric? Gurr-lllll. You’ve no idea how much I almost wet myself. I’m gonna need another one of those moist towelettes–seriously! C’mon bring it through! I bought a yard of the black, and a half yard of the royal blue. The glitter must be heat-set something hardcore, as I’ve tried to flake it off an it ain’t budging. I’m sure the washing machine will have something to say about that, but until then!
How adorable is that s’mores fabric? I’m ready to use it up on everything right now. It’s gonna be my new fussy cut and low volume go-to. Love. Love. Love. I also had to pick up this little fat quarter of airplanes just to add to the someday collection. I’m gonna need a whole shelf just for airplane fabric pretty soon!
Then there was this hot piece of Sunday morning! This is a fussy cutting haven, with dollops of coffee, cameras, and catch phrases. My bestie, Lacy J, is a coffee nut, I’m a bit of camera nut, so I’ve somehow got to make something for both of us that incorporates this one fabric. Coordinating pouches? Coordinating fanny packs? Oooh, we may have a winner!
And last but not least, unicorns with pink clouds and rainbows because if there’s anything that’s gonna make this world feel less upside down, this is it!
I wish I could go shopping with you because you find the coolest things. Love it all today 🙂
Another great line up of beautiful/funny/quirky designs. Favs? Marshmallows. But the Gems and The multi-color Queen could make a statement. Big smiles from this side of the equator.
ok, now i want a s’more!!
Hi Molli! I made a number of origami market bags as Christmas gifts last year using a tutorial by Alanda Craft. There’s a handy video tutorial too – scroll to the bottom of the page: https://www.alandacraft.com/2018/04/21/origami-bag-tutorial-easy-to-make-market-tote-bag/. Looks like those bananas might be directional. If you’ve had a bit too much of the upside down of late (haven’t we all – will it never end?!) and bananas going every which way doesn’t work for you, I’ve seen this bag made using 3 pieces for the outer fabric. Check out the tutorial by Very Shannon, which also gives a formula to make this bag in any size you like: https://www.veryshannon.com/blog/2014/05/sewing-origami-bento-bag-tutorial.html. Haven’t made one of these for myself yet so I can’t comment on function but the recipients tell me they love them and they look pretty cool!
BTW, I am loving that glitter floral!
