Shaz’s LOL Quilt
Wouldn’t it be great if I actually showed you the quilts that I make, right here on the blog? What a fancy-shmancy idea, eh? I promise you I haven’t been sitting up here on my velvet throw pillows, sipping martinis, and flicking my blonde hair extensions. Wait. Okay, I have been doing that, but I haven’t just been doing that. I’ve also been sewing in between the shmalapalooza that life sometimes brings my way, your way … our way.
One of my recent flimsy finishes is this beauty I call Shaz’s LOL Quilt. Titled so, as it is for a good friend of mine whose nickname is Shaz, it’s made from Liberty of London (LOL), it’s a quilt, and we’ve had too many LOL moments to count. He recently left me–that bitch–to take a job in Singapore. So I’m like, who needs a quilt in Singapore, where it’s a thousand degrees in the dead of winter. So I’m hoping he hangs it on his wall, or drapes it over a couch, just to give his new home a spruce of sparkle.
This quilt actually started at his request. He had purchased several scrap packs of LOL fabric just because he thought it was pretty. (I secretly think he’s a gay). See, LOL! So he gave it to me with the request to turn pretty into prettier. He had already been down a Google rabbit hole of LOL quilts that led him to find Red Pepper Quilts. He was enamoured with her use of LOL fabric and Essex Linen. So I grabbed her tutorial and went to work.
Y’all know though that I can’t just be all copy-cat like that. I gots to make it my own, right? So instead of just using the Essex Linen, I started throwing in a splattering of similarly coloured grey metallic fabrics, as well as the metallic Essex Linen. The metallic Essex Linen can be a little temperamental to work with (turn the iron down), but it has a subtle shift that gives the quilt more depth. Oh and honey-child, it has a sparkle that you wouldn’t believe. So not only do you get that LOL goodness, you get a shimmy shimmy coco pop realness!
All of those square are 2″ finished, so in its entirety it finishes at 56″ x 72″. It’s a good one to sit on your lap, much like Shaz himself! I’ve got this baby off at the longarmer (woop! woop!), and once I get it back I’ll be whipping a stitch like a bitch in heat! There’s a special surprise for the backing, but binding … ooh la la. Solid colour? A pop of lime? What say you out there?
Also, sidebar: How great is this white on white wall as a backdrop? It’s a recent find, that I need more of in my life!
Did you tape that gorgeousness to the wall? Fabulous! Shaw is very lucky to have you.
Oh Molli! That LOL quilt!! Lucky Shaz! That wall..what a find!

That is really elegant – the greys are perfect !!
I love it and I’m not too proud to copy your sparkling beauty. I’ve been collecting liberty scraps for years…time to cut, and sew. The gray is perfect…thanks for the inspiration.
I love the simplicity of this quilt. Makes the gorgeousness pop. Great quilt
If you have any more of that dark blue that is in the quilt, I’d use that for a very elegant binding.
Oh this is such a good make Molli! And like a few others on here I might have to be copying, the Liberty is calling.
Do non-quilters actually buy fabric just because? This is such an odd idea to me! Fabulous quilt btw.
I am with Peggy – that dark blue that is scattered overall would be the perfect binding to use. The red would be my second choice. Great job on the quilt, I tackled Elizabeth Hartman’s Tokyo Subway quilt made of 2.5″ squares and thought I would never finish –
just today I was wondering how Liberty tana lawn worked with Essex Linen. I guess now I have my answer. Great quilt
This is absolutely divine Molli !!! <3
I didn’t know you were into Little Anthony and the Imperials.
I love ‘Shimmy Shimmy Coco Pop’! My husband and I are right now looking at tickets on the internet for their show in St Charles Illinois in April.
I applaud you for having the …courage! to even cut a LOL. I even hate to waste the fabric needed for seams. This quilt has just the right amount of pizzazz! LOVE, LOVE LOVE
