Sunday Stash #263 – Back
Let me just dust myself off for a few minutes. [extended pause] Whew. Okay, then. Where did that two months go since my last post? To say that there’s been some shit happening in my life over the past six months would be an under-under-statement. I’m not gonna say there haven’t been tears, because on some days, Laaaawwwd. I will say though, I’ve learned this all seems to be part of the “adulting” thing you warn your kids about. I’ve found that it is easier to smile than cry, and as such the makeup doesn’t run. So let’s just keep on, keeping on, shall we? Fabric is a go-go!
The amazing pieces I’m showing you today are from my trip to Hong Kong last December. Due to the magic of the universe, there is a fabric store in Causeway Bay around the block from my office. It’s called the Tailor and Alteration Needlework Club, and is on the 19th floor of an otherwise unassuming office building. It shows up on Google Maps, so if you’re ever in the area, you should check it out! I mean, it looks like a big hot mess from the photo below, and it certainly is! Ow! But Glitterati, that is the best type of shop to explore and find the amazing!
As you can see from the first photo, I found some new low volumes to add to the stash that even I hadn’t seen before! The glasses, yes, but those arithmetic problems at the back make me miss chalkboard races! (I was always a winner baby!) Plus the Needlework Club had heaps of fat eighths and quarters to dig through. It was generally cheaper–as expected–to buy yardage, but not all of the smaller cuts were represented by the bolts in store. So rummage I did!
I did find on the bolt this Yoko Okamoto by Yuwa fabric of the world. What a delight to see Australia featured as well. Of course Tasmania got cut off, although I’m sure they are used to it by now! I picked up the yellow and teal colour ways, but, there’s a purple one too if that’s your thing.
Next is this Yuwa Men’s Fashion Goods in Natural Cream, which gives you so many fussy cutting possibilities it’s worth picking up extra! I already own it in the teal and purple version, so this red and cream was a must! It was perfect for using in my youngest brother Cody’s t-shirt quilt: Passing Notes In Class.
Let’s not forget to mention that fried egg number at the back! A little egg on your face, now how about some in your quilt? I just thought this would be a hilarious substitute for a dot print. Oh those Japanese prints are wack-a-doo, aren’t they?
Finally, a few peckish bits of this map print (you’d think I need help remembering where I am!) and these speech bubbles in pink. They also came in a variety of colours, but ya know, pink. I just thought these would be wonderful little fussy cut encounters as well. I’m always looking to expand my fussy cut materials in unique, graphic ways. These fit the bill!
Would you believe that I did all of this damage on my lunch break? I know, right? And for some more truth tea: I’m back in Hong Kong later this month! If any of you know of some other far reaching quilt fabric shops I should check out, please let me know! Otherwise, I’ll just keep digging through this one! Much love, speak soon.
So happy to hear from you. Some dazzle in my inbox and of course fabric coveting
I just want to put this out there…the t-shirt quilt you made a few years ago is the best looking t-shirt quilt I have ever seen and totally changed my mind about them! I’m looking forward to seeing Passing Notes In Class!
I was just wondering whereyou’ve been. Sorry that your absence was tear induced, and hooe you kand in your feet.
Sorry about the bad, fat finger typing – cold meds induced.
Typos or not, sending sparklicious hugs.
I was in Hong Kong Dec 2017/Jan 2018 and NEVER saw anything like this store. I’m going to call you the next time I go for shopping! I do know a couple places in Viet Nam for silk! HUGE warehouse with stacks to the ceiling open all night.
Keep up the good works – we love hearing from you!
Good to hear from you! Love every piece of fabric candy you posted today. If there is some hidden fabric outpost around the mid-Atlantic area of the US that carries such fun fabric, PLEASE tell me where. Enjoy your finds
You make such a difference in my world. I made your “Dick” quilt for a friend, and he replied by commissioning a big, expensive quilt. Thank you! Your perspective is so unique and wonderful. So sorry for your sadness, and hoping that being back home is comforting. xo
