WIP Wednesday – On the Run
I haven’t done a work-in-progress Wednesday post in ages. So long in fact, that I’ve had to restock the vintage champagne bottles! So let’s pop some new bottles and talk about what I’m working on lately! I’ll show you three photos today, and no lie, they are some whipper snaps that I captured before rushing out the door to work. I finally got my aching back, back to my real life job this week. Real-life: why you gotta be so ugh? Do you feel me? Point being, my photos are nothing spesh just to show you that sometimes we just ain’t got time for that.
This adventure in paper piecing is my nod to David Butler and his fine-ass fabrics. It has a working title, Twisted Butlers, using my free Twisted Elegance Paper Pieced Pattern. Mr. Sparkles says they remind him of Aboriginal prints with a boomerang motif, but I ain’t gonna touch that cultural appropriation argument with a ten-foot pole. Ms. Tula already got burned by that, and I have no desire to field the unsolicited commentary that might trigger. I’m a simple girl, after all. (Okay, so maybe I’m not entirely risk-adverse to controversy, but just not right now!) All that said, I’m loving seeing this quilt top growing day-by-day.
Then we have this currently untitled project that has seemed to come out of nowhere. Somewhere between coming home from hospital in a opioid daze and this past weekend, I have actually finished this quilt top. It started by me just throwing fabric at my design wall (literally) and then randomly sewing pieces of it together. When I kind of came out of that daze, I was like, well, I’m already this far along: might as well. I’d rather keep going than get out the seam ripper! I did intend for that Heather Ross octopi fabric to be the hero, and then build somewhat of a playground around them. I also played a lot with transitions from one fabric element to the next. This quilt in its entirety has what I think is a unique design element that I can’t wait to show you!
Finally, here’s a simple representation of a larger project using Liberty of London prints combined with mostly Essex Linen plus a few other fabric surprises. This is for my buddy Shaz that I’m calling Shaz’s LOL Quilt. (#shazsLOLquilt on Instagram) I’m using the classic tutorial by Red Pepper Quilts. I must have at least 100 blocks completed, as I’ve just been chain-piecing the hell out of these pieces with no discernible end in sight. I figured I’ll just stop when I run out of fabric! If you’ve seen my stash, you’d probably understand that I could be here a while! I’m a bit giddy to sew all these blocks together and see what happens!
There you go! These are the quilts at the top of my priority list, but of course that could all change by next Wednesday! I’m just over-the-moon to be sewing again–with my machine–and hopefully, I’ll have some beautiful final results to share with you soon.
Well, I love the first one, but then I did a long ago too–still haven’t done it 🙂 Not too sure in my pea brain about the second one, but then here comes the third one–and what is not to love about a simple 16 patch?? Or a simple 9 patch ?? Or a simple 4 patch ?? I guess the new look of the Essex Linen makes it all “modern” ?? Very glad that you are back sewing and posting. XO
Lovin’ all three WIP’s, especially your aboriginal boomerang! I’ve done that 16 patch tute from Red Pepper and yes it’s addictive…it’s gonna be fab some day. And the colors with the octopi print ….what’s not to like; Mr. Sparkles is pulling it together.
Nice to see you are back…
“Real-life: why you gotta be so ugh?” – story of my life for the last three months at least! But we keep on keeping on – and crafting on, eh!
<3 Mr Twisted, dude's got C-L-A-S-S! Very intrigued by your octopussies too! Liberty + Essex linen is a winner, I made a FPP cushion with that pairing and I love it – and so does mum, who gets to sit on it! :p
So happy you’re back sewing. It always brings me so much joy, well except for the mess piled around my ironing board and sewing table!
It’s great that you are so excited to be sewing again. I’m looking forward to more details on the Heather Ross quilt top, and I’m curious just how you will handle all the blocks you piece for the #shazsLOLquilt if you keep sewing until you run out of fabric! 🙂
I am just happy you are here and enjoying yourself! I downloaded the great ab boomerang for when I become more brave. The octopussies, the LOL 16-patch…I love them all! Thank you Molli!

I like this diamond quilt.
I love your WIPS, especially Twisted Butlers! Wish my WIPS were as cool.
I had to laugh at your cultural appropriation comment! My husband got scolded by a gift shop manager at a museum or art gallery (not sure which) in Sydney a number of years ago for making some comment which was deemed inappropriate by her! We both stood there with our mouths open wondering what he said that was so bad. It was all quite innocent to us
Well no wonder you haven’t posted a WIP progress post . . . you’ve been too busy WIP-ing it!! Love all three.
I’m glad that your back and sewing again. You seem much happier. Stitching is just the best for whatever ails you.
