Sunday Stash #259 – Long Distance Shopping Continued
Last time on Sunday Stash: “Find the Liberty table! Not the fake Liberty! I don’t care, push the ladies out of the way! Sumimasen! … Wait, don’t forget the Kokka! Go back, go back, go back!” Exactly. If you’re fabric shopping in Japan, you really can’t get Liberty without Kokka. They need to be purchased in tandem, or you’re really just doing everyone a disservice. I mean otherwise, really what’s the point. Thankfully, my work colleague who was showering me with fabric fantasy completely understood and hightailed it over to the Echino/Kokka table. I’m not one to argue about yardage, so I had her focus on the half-yard pre-cuts scattered about.
Without knowing too much about the fabrics themselves, I had her pick me up things that I found visually attractive. I assumed being Echino that these would all be their linen / cotton blend commonly used for bags (or hanging out in my fabric stash!) However, when I got them in my well manicured hands, I discovered that many of them were double-gauze instead! Who knew that Echino had started branching out into such soft and luxurious substrates!? Not that I minded one sparkly bit, because now I just want to mix and match them with other cottons to provide some textural depth to future projects.
All of these could make a really soft cushy for my tooshie! I’m especially loving those bold red-orange triangles, and I see them hanging out with other bold teals and purples. While these weren’t what I expected them to be, they’ve definitely provided some inspiration in new directions. Isn’t that what’s so great about fabric? It can really lead the way in determining how your latest projects will mix and mingle. Never be afraid to let the fabric speak to you, and make sure you show up to listen to what it has to say.
The last two fabric pieces that my work colleague grabbed from this table were quite different again. Girlfriend had her eyes on the prizes, with a dollop of sparkle for the win! The aqua piece on top is embroidered with purple birds and geometric triangles, while the grey piece underneath is adorned with silver metallic flora and fauna. Again, unusual from U to L, but I’ll take it and work it like a stripper working a pole. Sidebar: If you’ve never seen me working a pole, you are in for a delicious treat! Okay, so that’s enough work for her this week, but I did make her take one more fabric pit stop before heading to the cash register. I’ll show you those, next time for Sunday Stash with Molli Sparkles.
Oh Molli, you know you are too cool! I love double gauze! It’s too cool, too!

She chose so well. I think you should let her increase your stash on a regular basis.
Those last two pieces are stunning. I can definitely see inspiration from them all, but those last two… it will be fun to see what you make with them!
Yummy!!!!! Hate to wash it but it gets even yummier! POOF! It fluffs out. Did you get enough to make a shirt? Now that is a Alabama Gramma Hug from Japan. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy!!!
I accidentally ended up with some double-gauze fabric when online shopping. I’m looking forward to using it when I’ve got the project planned!
Please check your fabric – I think it might be the same fabric that the Royal Family (Kate) uses as swaddle blankies for the kidlets. And it just keeps getting softer and makes a lovely blankie to drag around. I also have used it for clothes and must be prewashed as it gets wonky the first wash. I hope it turns out to be a happy accidental purchase for you.
