On a Night Like This Cushion
This weekend while we were shopping at Tiffany’s with Charlotte in celebration of her 16th birthday, Adam and I decided we needed a little shiny treat as well. To that end we found ourselves coming home with new luxury bed linen by none other than Kylie Minogue! Who? What? For those in the US, Kylie is a global pop star on the same level as Madonna, but somehow has never broke into the American market. For those already in Kylie’s hot pants, did you even know she has her own line of manchester, scandalously called, Kylie Minogue At Home!?
Well, if there ever was a bed linen range for someone named Molli Sparkles, this is certainly it! Each collection is dripping in sequins, velvet, and sparkles. Plus, it was like 60% off — which I hear some of you already saying, “Yeah, I can see why!” LOL! Totally not everyone’s cup of truth tea, but we’ll drink it! So after we got our black sequins and satin duvet, matching pillow shams, and velvet European shams home, Adam commented that we needed a gold accent cushion! (Never satisfied, that one!) Better the devil you know, right!?
So what do I have to do? I stepped back in time, and pulled out this new fabric I recently picked up from Quiltsmith. (This is another stash acquisition that hasn’t got the royal Sunday Stash treatment yet). As Mr. Sparkles said, “It shouldn’t take you too long, you just sew that way, sew that way, sew that way, zip and your done!” Well not quite. I spent most of my time actually cutting the fabric panels out so that the text would match up from the front to the back. I didn’t bother quilting the panels; I’m using them as a single layer. This picture shows me trying to stuff my Ikea feather pillow like a sausage into its new tight casing. For extra oomph, I made the cushion cover one inch smaller than the cushion on both sides.
I didn’t even include a zipper! I hand-sewed this glitz and glamour shut because I see cushions as disposable, especially when they are simple casings such as this one. Plus, it’s more decorative than functional, and if I catch anyone eating spaghetti in my bed, I’m calling Kylie directly! If it gets dirty, or boring, or worn out, I’ll just rip out the stitches and make another one. Not everything is meant to last forever, although gold should last a really long time!
This is the final piece, which I’m calling my On a Night Like This cushion. If you want to see it in person, feel free to come over for a sleepover with me, Mr. Sparkles, and Kylie Minogue!
The pillow looks perfectly at home, and I love the dark, cozy vibe of your sleeping space – with the requisite amount of bling, of course. 🙂
I love the Kylie Minogue bed linen collections. They are fabulously glitzy and your cushion sets it off so well.
Pretty cushion! I had to play A Night Like This by The Cure. Yeah I come from different background 🙂
Oh Molli, you just crack me up. You’ll have to let us know how many sleepover attendees there are! Great cushion and I agree with your philosophy on these sorts of items. Flick it once it has served its purpose.
Kylie not known in the USA? She’s so big here in the U.K. That seems impossible . Do Americans not watch neighbours ?
Seriously Molli? Did you just invite me for a sleepover? Just as my hopes and dreams were dashed, you went and save the best for last. Not sure what is an appropriate bedwarming present, but I’ll make sure that whatever I bring has glitter on it.
I adore Kylie, and have done ever since I was small and I was singing Hand On Your Heart in my car seat.
