Road to Cronulla
Oh, what do we have here? Another finish, that’s what we have up in here! I’ve kept this one on the down low (which is so unlike me, because I prefer the up high) but it has been percolating since the beginning of the year. Mr. Sparkles’s lifelong friend, Gabrielle, had an historic birthday in February. To celebrate, I made her what is typically referred to as a Road to Tennessee lap quilt. Since she lives oceanside in the beachy suburb of Cronulla in Sydney, I’ve titled it Road to Cronulla.
It started way back at Sunday Stash #2 when I was just a wee, baby quilter. Those were the days! I found these charm packs at my LQS, The Remnant Warehouse, for 25% off. I didn’t know much about Vintage Modern, and even less about Camille Roskelley. Oh, how that has changed. For those initiated in the Mr. Sparkles Says scroller, there’s even a very popular Vintage Modern quote tucked away in there.
It wasn’t long before I decided on the Road to Tennessee block, and I finished the quilt top in a week–an intense mutha of a week. Except, at the end of the week it became a UFO–I know, how could I? I mean, it was a birthday present for a friend! Basically, I hit that business so hard, that when the top was done, my poor little fingers would just not go on. So into a box it went.
Until now. And here we have it, Road to Cronulla.
You’ll notice that I machine bound this quilt. I used a mish-mash of tutorials to assemble and attach the binding, but I purposefully did it back to front. Instead of blindly trying to catch the binding wrapped around the back, I pulled the binding from the back around to the front, and sewed it right on the edge. Because I used scarlett thread to match the backing, even when it isn’t exactly in the ditch, it’s hardly noticeable. I finally think this technique might have a place in my sewing arsenal.
I’ve nearly got my signature, Glitter Flecked Binding (GFB) perfected. With each quilt I’m auditioning different sizes of glitter, and now I’m thinking I need to audition some new fabrics. Maybe some Disco Dot in snow? I best be stockin’ up! I’m sure I’ll need it for something else, too.
This perfect quilting was done by Quilt Jane who now has the title of “Quilter to the Stars.” (I mean, she quilts for me, right?) That flower design is so, so hot for Gabrielle, and that delicious thread choice: Aurifil 2805 Light Turquoise Blue reflects the view of her oceanside apartment. Vintage, yet, Modern, indeed.
Gorgeous! And that's exactly how I machine bind my quilts…..back to front works well 🙂
I cannot get enough of that color combo. LOVE IT. And that binding technique seems to work best for me, although I'm still struggling with that whole process a bit!
Congrats on sew many levels with this fab finish! Vintage Modern is such a perfect description. The fabrics are, of course, sweet… And the pieced backing… Stunning! And that contrast in the quilting… Spectacular! But I am so happy (and proud) to hear that you are mastering the machine sewn binding. I just adore your signature glitter fleck and am excited to see some of the proposed future changes in fabric choices. This is certain to become a well loved quilt!
Is good. Is very very good. Lucky lassy.
Pretty pattern and perfect fabric choice. Congrats on great finish!
Love it! I love this pattern but don't have the patience to try it out yet 🙂
Looks amazing! Definitely worth the wait 🙂
Lucky girl…beautiful kwilt!
This is such a classic pattern but a good one. You did a fabulous job on it and I love the quilting! Beautiful finish!
disco dots for binding sparkle = a huge yes. A lovely finish, and a worthy use of Vintage Modern!
Proper machine binding – well done! That's how Rita does it you know. And I figure if its good enough for Rita …
Beautiful quilt! That is the same machine binding method I use, I'm not very good with the quilting blind deal. The fabrics and quilting work so well with that quilt pattern! I'm sure it will be a well loved quilt 🙂
Gorgeous quilt, thanks for linking up, beautiful quilting, fab finish
Happy birthday to Gabrielle, indeed! Lucky girl! It's beautiful!
Gorgeous, love the quilting too! I've been making some charity quilts for the kids ward at a local hospital and have been thinking of the whole exercise as practice, especially for binding attachment… and Lord knows I need practice at binding attachment!
My birthday is in April, that's 7 months notice. I like quilts with a lot of white and rainbows.
Well these birthday things roll around every year, so, ya know, miss one, there's always another coming up ;o)
Congrats on the finish just beautiful. Love vintage modern fabric. What a fabulous way to do the binding. I have tried machine binding before but it never looks like a straight seam. If you do it on the reverse I am assuming you have better control of straight lines? Thanks for sharing. Stopping by from Crazy Mom Quilts. Marie (mlismore@optusnet.com.au)
From here in Tennessee it looks wonderful.
It looks great! Congrats on finding a binding technique that works for you!
Ooh, the quilting is a very nice complement to a classic pattern. Yay for sale fabric!
bee-you-tea-full. this is so fabulous. and your glitter binding is too cute. love.
Loooove it! I'm definitely going to try that little double stripe on the binding. Is that functional or just pretty? Actually, how fabulous would that look all the way around the quilt at random intervals?
I've just discovered the Road to Tennessee block pattern recently. It's pretty amazing how many different looks you can get out of it. I think I'm going to have to try this one next. ;- ) I'm also going to try putting the binding on the back and bringing it to the front for machine stitching. I love to hand sew down bindings but there are times when it needs to be done more quickly!
Very nice!
