Design Wall Monday #03 – Bloom Bloom Pow!
Today, I want to share some random thoughts based around a new project I started, and my design wall-slash-sometimes-floor. Lee over at Freshly Pieced is hosting a new QAL (that’s quilt-a-long for those uninitiated souls) called Bloom Bloom Pow. As soon as I saw this, I knew I wanted to make this quilt. It’s actually the first QAL I’ve participated in, as I’ve so far been a bit shy about jumping into a project that will directly compare what I’m doing to someone else. Just utter silliness, I know.
I couldn’t let my hesitation stand in the way though, and started raiding my stash for some lucky fabrics. In the back of my head I remembered the often sprouted words of American Idol judges, “Make it your own.” So that’s exactly what I’ve chosen to do! The white background is out! The typical quilting cottons, gone! Yardage? Who needs it! I’ve decided to put all those batiks to good use, and do a collage of black-based fabrics in place of the white, and I’m using only fat quarters. In my head I’m seeing a shimmering rainbow of fireworks set against a variable black sky.
It will be an ultimate experiment in taking Lee’s wise words and converting them into my sparkling vocabulary of ideas. If it works, amazing, if it doesn’t, well, it’s just fabric, and I’ll have learned a lot for next time. My ultimate point is this, do what makes you happy, and don’t be afraid to sew off the beaten path. You might surprise yourself, and find your inner quilting superstar.
Shine on, my sparkling ones!
Throwin’ some sparkle love out to Stitch by Stitch’s Anything Goes and Plum and June’s Let’s Get Acquainted linky parties. This week Let’s Get Acquainted is being hosted by Nat at Made In Home.
Oh great color choice! It will be fantastic
OMG those colours are amazing. It is going to be stunning.
Well you know I already think it's an awesome idea! I have changed my mind again and gone completely different to my first two ideas! And after starting the cutting today, I'm loving myself sick!
Fireworks are perfect–and it even still works with the name of the QAL (at least, the POW! part). 🙂 I'm not a huge batik fan, but I can see them working really well for what you have in mind, and I'm looking forward to seeing it!
Oh hell, the whole point of QALs is to take the pattern and run with it! Looking forward to seeing yours
Definitely see fireworks in that combo – can't wait to see how it comes together!
Great that you decided to join the QAL. It is a beautiful pattern! Thank for sharing on let's get acquainted!
