Sunday Stash #238 – Magic Suitcase
Goodness gracious great balls of glitter! What a trip! I thought about doing a holiday recap post, but there’s just so much to say, I don’t even know which way is up yet. So I’m just gonna put all of that on the back burner for a bit, and when I sort through some photos of interest, you’ll be the first to know!
I know all of you are thinking, “What did Molli buy?! How much did he buy? Lemme see!” All in due course my little fabric padawans. There will be plenty of detailed fabric stylings for weeks to come. Today, I thought I’d show you how it all got home, and how much you can bring back with you! (Because remember, too much is never enough).
I purposefully brought an empty suitcase, known as my Magic Suitcase, dedicated just for fabric. Let’s be honest, there were no delusions that I’d be shopping frugally. It was a no holds barred, frenzied, fabric feast! One has to be be dutifully prepared for these types of situations! My Magic Suitcase is of medium size, about 24″ x 30″, and is not dedicated as one of those “light as a feather” styles. While not crazy-heavy empty, I’d say it still weighs about 10 pounds.
I managed to get everything I bought into that one suitcase. Nothing else. This was first class for fabric only. I considered buying a spare business class seat on the airplane for the Magic Suitcase’s return journey but Mr. Sparkles said, “No.” Whatever. One can never be too sure–can you imagine if this one bag of all bags went missing? Can you even!? ::clutches pearls:: It’s really just too much to even bear the thought! Thankfully, it made it home safe, and I’ve started unpacking it across my studio floor.
So how much fabric did I bring back in the Magic Suitcase? More than I thought! When we got to the airport, the suitcase hit the scales right at 49.7 pounds (with a limit of 50 pounds). Since I’ve been fondling it each night before bed, I have started measuring and adding it all up. The grand total of all this colourful business: 87 yards (80 metres)! I can now safely confirm that my Magic Suitcase holds 87 yards of fabric. If I didn’t know myself, I’d be absolutely shocked! LOL!
For those with upcoming travels, don’t quote my experience as gospel for your own. My suitcase size and weight is approximate, as is the weight of many different fabric types. Hopefully this at least gives you some sort of idea on what sort of fabric paradise you can create for yourself! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go start putting some of these beauties away in my cupboard of love!

Glad you got so much great stuff – sorry Vegas gave you a terrible send off. I’m interested to see what you do with the Alison Glass panel – I have a few of those too.

So sorry to hear that you got caught in the ugly mess in Las Vegas.
I thought you would have one of those expandable ones, and this shows how much you can cram in!!! Gorgeous fabrics, so glad it came through customs without a single piece being confiscated. Maybe there are NO quilters overseeing all the goodies as they go through the scanner. I hope all the Las Vegas tragedy will soon be fading, or at least dimming a little, the horror maybe lingering, and so very thankful you were able to fly home again. I try not to dwell on it, too horrific to contemplate.
I think the “magic suitcase” has done a marvelous job. But maybe it needs to retire, trade her in for a lighter model. If you get a new “magic suitcase 2.0” that weighs maybe 3 or 3 pounds, that would leave you more fabric buying capabilities. Can’t wait to see what this fabrics turn into.
You are home. You are safe. Now let’s see what was in the suitcase. Open open open!
Wow, that’s a magic suitcase indeed! 87 yards of fabric… 🙂 And just under the weight limit. Sounds like you and the suitcases did your jobs perfectly!
Molli honey – you had weight for another fat quarter. I know – one shouldn’t be too greedy! Love the stash with post it notes with info. I guess with 80 + yards to your name you do need to track these babies. You are going to have to purchase some new boards to wrap these gorgeous new fabrics. I just want to say I am glad you have returned safe from your Las Vegas horror. It will take time to process the experiences but we are here for you. And thank you for sharing it because it allows us to support you.
