The Honey Pot Bee: My Blocks

I’ve been playing a bit of catch up with The Honey Pot Bee. There’s been so many great block selections that I’ve really had to pick and choose which ones to sew up first. Isn’t that the great thing about this quilting bee, though? It’s like a choose-your-own-adventure book where you get to decide the makes you want to make. What a brilliant idea, if I do say so myself! Holla and hair flips!

I generally share most of my blocks on Instagram (molli_sparkles) as they’re about the only things I’m making these days. I thought I should assemble some of my latest dalliances right here for you to see. I started the year not having too much of a theme, but it has evolved with every fabric pull for every block. From those wonky Christmas trees to this month’s mini log cabins, I’ve tried to keep my fabrics full of saturated colours, leaning towards a candy palette. Sweet and sour like me, you see?

One thing that has happened along the way is that I have avoided using any white fabrics. At first this was accidental, but as I progressed with each block, I chose to employ more saturated colours even for the backgrounds. I’m quite happy with this decision, and I think it will help me break out of the white background mould for future projects as well. It’s a funny thing that I’ve used so much white throughout my quilting career considering I’m a mad diva for colour. (Note to self: buy some bolts of colour!)

So tell me, are you still happy with any thematic element you’ve chosen for your quilt blocks? Have you shifted at all? Or are you just making carte blanche and will deal with tying everything together at the end?
