String Cushion, But Orange
Remember when dear daughter was all like, “Well, and for my third cushion I think it should be like this, but orange.” Well, I finally got around to sewing all my orange strings together, and whipping this up using my String Piecing Without a Foundation tutorial.
See that strip of Little Kukla Meadow in Orange in the top right corner? I am declaring that as my favourite fabric of 2013. I know, big. call. I only had one fat quarter of it, but it served me well this past year. But it’s now 2014, so time to put it in the scrap bin, and see what new fabric will surprise and delight.
When I went to make the envelope enclosure backing I had a mild panic attack that involved lots of curse words. You see, I cut that Paper Clips in Orange from Type fabric 10″ too short, and I didn’t have anything else for a do-over. That, my lovelies, is the perfect time to force yourself to turn a problem into an opportunity. (The curse words are still fun though!) So I found this Pearl Bracelets scrap literally sitting at the top of the pile–serendipity–and I love the contrast it has added. Mistake? What mistake!
Lovely! The back looks great with that strip of pearl bracelets – definitely looks intentional.
Beautidul! I may justhave to make something like this for my husband. You have really made the orange sing there!
*smack*!! Great cushion, orange is one of my favourite colours and love all those prints 🙂
Loving it. So very vibrant. The back defintiely looks intentional. I've never got into pearl bracelets but I have to say it actually looks really great on your cushion. I could yet be converted
Haha, the paper clip fabric is the best! 😀
Ah, you have 'opportunities' at work too, huh? ;o) Love the cushion though :oD
I do love a good orangey orange. Your daughter is oozing with good taste! I also love that the pearl bracelet fabric had pushed its way to the top of the scrap box and was calling out 'Pick me, pick me!'.
Gorgeous! I am crushing on orange lately!
And it's not a mistake, it's a design feature! 🙂
Beautiful Molli! I must try your string piecing method!! Sooo effective.
Gorgeous pillow! And that pop of purple… Fab!! Love turning those "oops" moments into pure awesomeness!
Seriously, you need to stop. I love it! As for the purple and orange,I love the color combo too, and I have a couple projects with purple and orange.
what an amzing cushion totally love it, and i love your "mistakes"
Mistake? pfft, planned all along I say
I absolutely love this and will give your tutorial a try soon! I'm {orange} crushing on string pieced anything right now. Orange is my favorite quilting fabric color – it is a lot more versatile than most people think. It's funny because it exists nowhere in my home decor or in my clothing, but I can't get enough of it in my quilts. Strange, huh?
Love it! I never really liked orange before the modern quilt movement. Now I love it! Sometimes fate pushes our creativity with those little opportunities. I love the back!
Love orange! Your pillow is awesome and your daughter must have inherited her dad's good taste!! 🙂 Gotta love those design opportunity moments…. I find cursing and a glass or two of wine will smooth those little wrinkles right out!! 😉
What a great mix of oranges! I have been drawn to the orange polka dot fabric you have included, but haven't been brave enough to try using it yet 🙂
This is just so vibrant!! What an eye catcher! You did a gorgeous job, and I'm not even an orange-y person! Love the purple on the back, what a great addition. If you think curse words are fun, I *think* you may like the quilt I posted today.
#1 I'm googling that orange fabric, it's super cool. #2 the purple is just perfect. I'm so glad that mistake happened. I wish all my mistakes turned out that good.
This pillow is so sunny – put a big smile on my face and warmed me right up. Love it!
So lovely! 🙂
Greetings from Finland!
Hugs, Ulla
Opportunities to expand our creative skills are the BEST!! Beautiful pillow!!
I really started liking orange in 2013 too, great cushion!!
Gorgeous! Better than the first!
Very cute, I like the orange very much.
I'm not very fond of orange, but must admit that this pillow looks awesome. Congrats!
Your daughter must love this. Has she picked out a fourth? Before you know it, you will have a whole rainbow. I will use your tutorial someday… I don't have the patience for the regular method.
