WiP Wednesday #21 – Picasso’s Eyes

Last Wednesday, I showed off the first element of my Sparkleworks quilt back. Later, I read Sharpie’s (from no hats in the house) comment, “Bowing down to the reigning scrap champion. Brilliant.” And here I didn’t even get to vote! So I decided this week I needed to crank up the volume even more. I vowed to blitz my #bloombloompow scraps and turn them into fabric dust. I can confidently say I am on my way there.  

I first sorted my scraps by approximate colour, and then just like “this little piggy” went to town on sewing them up. I’ve got a commissioned, improv quilt looming, so this was the perfect time to experiment. I quickly learned to let go, and embrace whatever the result may be. It is a completely different mindset to how we usually try to make every point match. (Sidebar, Woody Allen’s Match Point, brilliant!)

These pieces are my abstract interpretations of fireworks; through Picasso’s eyes if you will. I wanted them to look shattered, and explosive, but be contained in variously-sized squares. I’m hoping once I place them in the pieced back, their different sizes will give the impression of varying depths of distance. The largest one measures about 20″ x 25″. The backs of these blocks are totally zig-zag-zany insane with seams–you do not want to go there. (Longarmer Quilt Jane – you never saw this!)
